QUESTION :
How do I return to work on a Cloner "Photo Painting", after I have closed the file?

ANSWER : You will need to re-establish the link from your photographic Source File to your Art File.

STEP 1 : Beginning a painting using your photographic reference and the Cloner Variants...

  • Open your Source Photograph in Painter X.  (Keep it open until you are finished.)
  • Make a new file using Quick Clone in the File pull-down menu.  Work on your project.  When you have finished the session, save your work, and close both your source image and your art file.

STEP 2 :  After enjoying your dinner and possibly an adult beverage, you might be feeling revitialized and decide you wish to continue your painting …

  • Open your original Source Photograph in Painter X.
  • Open the last saved version of your Art File in Painter X.
  • Re-link your Source Photograph to your Art File by going to the File pull down menu.  Select Clone Source and off to the right in the sub-menu choose the file you wish to use.  After clicking on it, you will see a check mark. You are now ready to use your Cloner Brush Variants to continue your work.

Note:
The Source file must remain open for Painter to pull information from it while you are painting with the Cloner Brushes. If you forget to assign a file of your choosing as your source, Painter X will assign a default pattern file which is named “Hens and Chicks”.  (This default file is a photo of a cactus plant which happens to be blue-green in color.)

Clue : So, if you start painting with your cloner brushes and see something blue-green in color ... that is your clue that your forgot to assign your source file.

Cheers!
